Create and Refine Your Image

You never get a second chance to make a first impression

College is the perfect time to start developing and focusing your professional image

Some steps to follow:

  1. Be aware of what is out there about you on the internet. Many employers search sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Also Google or Bing yourself to see what pops up in print, pictures, and video. Employers will check blogs, postings, and video sites as well so do your best to make sure your professional side is what is available to the public.
  2. Get involved. If you aren't active in community or college groups now is the time to do so. Extracurricular activities look great on a resume.
  3. Be a leader. Don't be content with simply being a member, look for the chance to step up and be a leader in whatever group or organization you are a part of.
  4. Establish and maintain connections. Even if you don't plan on looking for a job right away it is still critically important that you get out into your chosen field and network. Attend seminars, workshops, and organization meetings in your industry. Network with people. Get business cards. Conduct informational interviews and keep the lines of communication between you and professionals in your chosen career open.
  5. Research, research, research. Know the job market for your chosen field inside and out. Salaries, benefits, where jobs are, and who is looking to hire are all things that you can research while still taking classes towards your degree/certification. Knowing really IS half the battle!
